Once BBC Earth had decided that they were going to do a story on the African wild dogs ( painted wolves) they visited locations across Africa where there substantial populations of the wild dogs. In Zimbabwe, they visited Hwange, Gonarezhou and Mana Pools. They selected Mana Pools to be the ideal location to do the filming because the wild dogs in this are more habituated to the sight on people on foot, as guided walking safaris are allowed in the Mana Pools National Park. In particular, the Vundu pack are accustomed to humans as Nick and Des have been following them for nearly a decade in the area.
